Judges 1-3
All or none

After Joshua's death there were still some battles to be fought. Each tribe inherited their land but their share of land still had other nations that God said to battles and destroy because they are followers of other gods.
Although people know that God was with them most of the people decided not to fight with other nations but to keep them and make them pay taxes to them.
Israelites got comfortable as they were and they didn't see the need to obey God's word all the way.
As the time went on Israelites lived among these Gentiles and gave their daughters away to them and took their daughters to marry them and eventually they turned away from the God and turned to gods of other nations.
God didn't protect them against their enemies anymore because His people have left them.
But as the time went on Israelites would pray to God and remember Him and God (because He still loved his people) would appoint judges among them that would save them from their enemies. But as soon as the judge died Israelites went back to disobeying God. And this pattern continued on and on.
Today...
Today God tells us that we need to continually work on ourselves, to try to become more like Jesus, we all have sins and desires we battle. Everyone knows that no one is perfect but with God's help and our desire to be like Jesus we can be perfect in God's eyes.
When we want to quit doing one or another sin we need to die for that sin. By "die" I mean that sin will no longer bother us.
How do I get to that point that that sin doesn't affect me anymore, that there is no desire in doing that sin? That is only possible if you ask Jesus to help you with that. God is the only one who can help us fight against ourselves.
But often just like Israelites we just settle in an stop fighting our sin, we look around and say "Well, I'm way better than that person, so I'm in a good place"... there is never a point when we should just settle in and stop working on ourselves.
If we truly have a relationship with Christ we will never compare ourselves to others, all of us have our own struggles to go through and Jesus wants to be there to help us, we just need to ask.
If we claim to only believe half way, and we're not fully committed then there is no share of heaven for us. God takes only those who are fully in Jesus.
