1-Samuel 9-10
People were unsatisfied with God being their leader, they wanted to be like other nations, they wanted to fit it by having a king.
Saul was a son of Kish, he was handsome and higher than any other person in the nation.
They story of Saul starts out with his father, Kish, loosing donkeys from his farm. He sends Saul and a servant to go search for them. Saul went about a long way and there was no sign of donkeys and said "Come, let us go back, lest my father cease to care about the donkeys and become anxious about us." (Ch.9 verse 5)
But his servant advised Saul to go to a man of God that lived near by, Samuel and ask him about the donkeys.
"Now the day before Saul came, the Lord had revealed to Samuel: "Tomorrow about this time I will send to you a man from the land of Benjamin, and you shall anoint him to be prince over my people Israel" (Ch.9 verse 15-16)
Samuel already knew about Saul and who he was.
Samuel invited Saul and his servant to go up on the high place to eat with him, and he said "As for your donkeys that were lost three days ago, do not set your mind on them, for they have been found."(Ch.9 verse 20) (Saul didn't even mention donkeys to Samuel)
When they were eating Saul got a special portion, a leg of an animal. This portion was meant for a priest-- Samuel is already treating Saul as a king, or perhaps he's testing him if Saul would boast or not.
The next day Saul and his servant decided to head back home, 'Then Samuel took a flask oil and poured it on his[Saul's] head and kissed him and said, " Has not the Lord anointed you to be the prince over his people Israel? And you shall reign over the people of the Lord and you will save them from the hand of surrounding enemies." (Ch.10 verse 1)
As a sign that what Samuel have said was indeed true he foretold to Saul that he will meet two men that will tell him that the donkeys have been found, then he will meet another three men who will give him two breads, a portion of what they were carrying to bring in offering to God (again Saul is getting priest's share) and then he will encounter a group of prophets prophesying and Samuel said "Then the Spirit of the Lord will rush upon you, and you will prophesy with them and be turned into another man. Now when these signs meet you, do what you hand finds to do, for God is with you." (Ch.10 verse 6-7)
And when Saul was leaving Samuel we read "When he[Saul] turned his back to leave Samuel, God gave him another heart." (Ch.10 verse 9)
Saul returned home and everything that Samuel talked about become true, but Saul didn't tell anyone about his kingship, no one knew until Samuel publically picked him from the Benjamin tribe and everyone recognized him as a king.
Today...
Saul wanted to go home but his servant advised him to go ask the man of God, and that was enough for Saul to go to Samuel. When Samuel told Saul that god chose him to be the king I think that it Saul believed it, but just to make sure he believed Samuel foretold him about people he would encounter.
The Lord wasn't enough for people, they needed something more. People told God in His face that they wanted more than a God, that they wanted a human to be their leader rather than their Lord.
Is it enough for us that God is there for us? Are we satisfied with Jesus being our Savior and do we truly feel forgiven? Is the Love of the Lord enough for us, if not, then we truly do not know God as our Savior.
Love of God is overwhelming and if we truly give ourselves to the Lord there would be no art of us that would not feel satisfied.
