Deuteronomy 27

Laws & Grace

This chapter is a part of the speech that Israel's priests and Levites were giving, this chapter contains only the curses, the blessings part is in the next chapter.

But nevertheless this chapter is important too. These chapters are a reminder to Israel of the laws and rules they, and their children must follow so God can bless them abundantly, but the main law is love!

Like it's been mentioned in chapters before, all God wanted his people to do is love Him. Because when you love someone you will do anything for them, you would obey them and do things out of want and not out of pressure of the law, or fear of death.

For us, Christians today these rules seems almost like common sense.

1.Creating other image, and bowing down to them (verse 15)
2.Dishonoring father and mother (verse 16)
3.Not moving neighbor's landmark (verse 17) What happens if you do move this landmark?-- Hosea 5:10 "The princes of Judah have become like those who move the landmark: upon them I will pour my wrath like water"
4. Misleading the blind (verse 18)
5. Perverting justice (verse 19)
6. Uncovering father's nakedness, lying with an animal, lying with a sister.
7. Sticking down one's neighbor. (verse 24)
8. Taking a bribe (verse 25)

And the last curse says " Cursed be anyone who does not confirm the words of the law by doing them. 'And all the people shall say. 'Amen.'" (verse 26)

These curses do not include the whole law as we know and not all the situations.
But today we do not live by the law we live by faith!
"For all who rely on the works of the law are under a curse ; for it is written [cursed who does not abide by the laws], Now it is evident that no one is justified before God by the law, for " The righteous shall live by faith" (Galatians 3:10-11)

So if we today do not need laws then why is this chapter is still in the Bible, why do we need to read this?

This chapter is not only a history of God's people but it's also a great reminder for us that we cannot simply follow a formula to reach heaven or to please God. If Jesus wouldn't have died for us we would be living in this world of following this law in fear of death... But we have this freedom from this law, because we live by faith and by love towards Jesus Christ.
