1-Samuel 15

There is no in between

Samuel comes to Saul and says "Thus says Lord of hosts, 'I have noted what Amalek did to Israel... now go and strike Amalek and devote to destruction all that they have. Do not spare them." (verse 2-3) Saul was to destroy all the humans and animals who belonged to Amalek nation.

Kenites(Moses' father-in-law was a Kenite) were also among the Amalekites  so Saul says to Kenites "Go, depart; go down from among the Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them. For you showed kindness to all the people of Israel." (verse 6)

Kenites left and Saul defeated the Amalekites. But instead of destroying everything like God has said, he kept Agag, the king of Amalekites and he kept the best goods and the best livestock and thing which were worthless he destroyed.

When Samuel came to Saul, Saul began to greet him, but Samuel knew what Saul has done, he knew that Saul has disobeyed the word of God, and broke God's commandment once again. We also see that Saul built a monument for himself. As a result Samuel says to Saul "The Lord has rejected you[Saul] from being king" (Ch.15 verse 26)
-In the previous chapter 13, we see that Saul's dynasty is rejected "But now your kingdom shall not continue" (Ch.13 verse 14) In this chapter we see that God rejects Saul as a person and a king.

Saul tries to defend his action by saying that he and people have spared the best to bring it to God in sacrifice, but Samuel answers "To obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen that the fat of rams." (verse 22)

Saul then puts the blame on the people saying that it was them who pressured him in keeping the best and not destroying it. Then Saul asks Samuel to go with him so he can bow before the Lord. But Samuel was very disappointed in Saul and said that he will not go with him "As Samuel turned to go away, Saul seized the skirt of his robe, and tore it...honor me now before the elders of my people and before Israel and return with me, that I may bow before the Lord your God."(verse 27-30)

Samuel goes with Saul and then takes a swords and kills Agag, and then he leaves. Saul and Samuel have to seen each other since then.

Today...
When we come to Christ, we know that we need to turn from our bad ways and start a new way of life with Christ (born again) if we want to truly be the followers of Christ.
We go to church we hear God's word being preached to us and we start cleaning our heart of bad words, of jealous thoughts, we get rib of bad habits and try our best to be nice to people. We battle our flesh and ask God to help us with this battle. But somewhere deep inside we are actually holding on to the sin that we are trying to battle. We contradict ourselves.

Like Saul we hear God's word but we don't listen carefully to it, Saul heard that he was suppose to destroy everything that was Amalekite's but he did not listen to it, it was hard for him to destroy things that he can potentially use later.
We know that we need to get rid of everything that is not God-like but we keep things that we kind of like. Try to picture it this way: Sins are beings, different sins different beings and when we realize that what we're doing is wrong we try to get rid of this sin, this being. We don't realize that over the years this being was fed and housed in our hearts and is much stronger than we thought and while we know that this being is wrong to have in our heart we kind of hold on to them because they became our "family" and life would be so much different without it. We hold on to sins that make us feel comfortable in this world. We sometimes gossip just to fit in into our group of friends, we sometimes say bad words so we don't seem so standoff-ish, and 'holly". Yet, we pray to God to help us fight this battle against our flesh.

God made the first step towards us, He gave us the chance of total forgiveness, gave us a chance for a better life, a change to live our life to our full potential and it's up to us to take this chance or leave it, there is no in between. We can't half way hold on to our sins and half way try to sort of follow Jesus.
