1-Samuel 23-26

What's the gain if we do good to those who do good to us?

David is in hiding and he has around 600 men with him by this point.
David hears that Philistines are attacking one of the cities and he askes God and God tells him to go to that city and tells him that David will defeat those Philistines.
Once David and his people defeated Philistines, David heard that Saul is coming for him to this city, and God tells David that the people of this city will not protect him, so David fled.

While David and his men were in hiding Jonathan, Saul's son came and found David and encouraged him saying "Do not fear for the hand of Saul my father shall not find you. You shall be king over Israel, and I shall be next to you. Saul my father also knows this."(Ch. 23 verse 16)

Saul then finds out that David is hiding in the wilderness and pursuits him. During his pursuit he comes into a cave, he doesn't know that David and his people were hiding in that cave. David's men were telling David to go and kill Saul because God gave this opportunity to him. So David got up and got close to Saul, but he only cut off a part of his robe and said "The Lord forbid that I should do this thing to my lord, the Lord's anointed, to put out my hand against him, seeing he is the Lord's anointed" (Ch.24 verse 6)

When Saul was leaving David got out of the cave and showed Saul the piece of the robe that he had cut off. Saul sees that David speared his life, apologizes "You are more righteous that I, for you have repaid me good, whereas I have repaid you evil" (Ch.24 verse 17)

After that David sends his servants to Nabal with greetings to ask for some food, and Nabal rudely gets rid of his servants. So David and his men get ready to go and get revenge and kill Nabal, because David has been good to Nabal and his servants and have been protecting Nabal's servants.  Once Nabal's wife, Abigail heard what her husband did she gets some food ready enough for David and his men and meets David and apologizes for her husband and stops David from killing Nabal and his whole house.

David replied "Blessed be your discretion, and blessed be you, who have kept me this day from bloodguilt and from working salvation with my own hand!" (Ch.25 verse 33)
Ten days later Nabal dies because God punished him for his disrespect towards David, and Abogail became David's wife.

Then we see that Saul again is chasing David, wanting to kill him. Saul and his men stopped for the night and David and one of his men went down to Saul's tent at night and took a spear that was next to Saul and a jar of water and left. The following day David spoke to Saul again saying that again he had a chance to kill him but didn't. Saul again apologizes and they go on their ways.

Today...
These few chapters give us a live testimony of this verse- "Overcome evil with good" Romans 12:21
It is so much easier said than done, but we as Christians and followers of Jeaus Christ must ask God for help and work on ourselves to accomplish this.
Our setting today is different from David's back then, but the situations are similar. We have people in our lives  that irratate us, or constantly do something to get us mad just to laugh at us, and they do it on purpose and we know it, and we must do good to those people.
Imagine coming into work or school and this person says something nasty to you, and as a Christian we have to do good to that person, buy him/her a coffee or something, or say something nice to them back. We are supposed to be the light to this dark world and we have to practice it daily.

But it's not all on the external, when you do good to those who do evil to you it's an internal battle that is fought everyday. Remember that a spiritual battle will never be won if we do not have our spiritual armor on. We are to be alert at all times because we must be ready to be used by God whenever He decides to use us.

Bible says-Whats the gain if we do good to those who do good to us? It's not hard being nice to people who are kind to us, the real task is to be nice and kind to peope who hate us.
