1-Samule 16-17
From the inside to the outside
Saul is rejected for disobeying and David is chosen by God to be the king for Israel.
God chose David because of David's heart; "For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart" (Ch.16 verse 7)
His anointment for kingship was private and Saul remained the public king, and we see that Saul picked David to play lyre for him when Saul was tormented by a spirit. And later Saul made David his armor-bearer.
In the next chapter we see that Philistines again went to wart against Israel. One Philistine who was labeled a giant, Goliath have been laughing at the Israel and their God. David arrived into the Saul's army to check on his brothers but instead about hearing Goliath's blasphemy he knew that God will give him the victory over Goliath. When Saul gave him an armor, David tried it on, but took it off and said "I cannot go with these, for I have not tested them" (Ch.17 verse 39)
As the battle begins between David and Goliath David the says"You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of armies of Israel, whom you have defied." (Ch.17 verse 45)
God gave victory to David and as soon as Philistines saw that their strongest man was defeated, they fled. Saul's army chased them down and killed most of the off.
Today...
We know that God looks deeper than man, God looks on the inside. But today people think that they can do just the same as anyone else and live however they want and claim that God only looks on the inside so it doesn't really matter what they do to the body as long as they know it their heart that they believe in Jesus Christ as their Savior.
It's true we come to God as we are and God loves each and every one of us, but the point of coming to Christ is change. To know a person is to know him by his fruits, so if we repent there will be fruits that follow, and if there's no fruits then something's wrong, we're doing something wrong. When we repent we turn from our old ways, it's impossible to come to Jesus and not be changed. If there's no difference in your life between the time before you came to know Jesus as your Savior and after then this should alert you. You need to get back in touch with Jesus.
There's always a change on the inside after the encounter with Jesus but as we with God's help work on our inside as a result we also change on the outside. Bad words don't seem so necessary anymore, being kind to everyone comes natural, dressing appropriately seems common sense, etc.
God knew David's heart and David knew God and what He did for Israel. David was a young man and we read that he battled lions and bears singlehandedly and won; but he knew that his victories came from God and they weren't his own. From a young age God saw David's heart and liked what he saw so much that He appointed David as a king.
If God looked in our hearts would He be please with what He sees?
