2-Samuel 1 [1-Samuel 27 28 29 30 31]
The REAL Best Friend

Overview of the end of 1-Samuel: In Chapter 27 David leaves Israel and goes over to the Philistines and fights battles on their side against other nations.
In Chapter 28 Philistines are getting ready to go against Israel and David is in the midst of the Philistines warriors. Meanwhile Saul hears that Philistines are ready to attack and prays to God but God doesn't answer him, and desperate to ask anyone about this battle he goes to a medium, (a woman that can talk to the dead people) Saul calls Samuel out of the dead to ask him for some advice, but Samuel tells Saul exactly what he told him when he was alive, that God have rejected Saul and then he says that Israel will be defeated in the battle against Philistines.
in Chapter 29 Some leaders of the Philistines people do not trust David and they send him and his people back home to the land of Philistines.
In Chapter 30 David and his people find that the city that he lived in with Philistines has been robbed so he goes after the people who did it and gets everything back. And God was with David.
In Chapter 31 Saul dies in the battle, he was injured and then killed himself by falling on his sword. Philistines came and robbed Israel and took Saul and his three sons and made public display of them. But some Israelites took Saul and his three sons back and burned them and buried their bones.
2-Samuel starts where an Amalekite, he came to David and told him about Saul's and Jonathan's death, and he also tells David that Saul asked him to kill him and he did. [Some say that it might be that this Amalekite is lying to David to look favorable in his eyes because he defeated his enemy, or Saul failed to kill himself and Amalekite is telling the truth.]
David is very sad and upset about this. He also blames the Amalekite for not thinking twice before killing the Lord appointed one, and so he kills this Amalekite. And then he sings a song about Saul and Jonathan.
And at the end he says "I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan; very pleasant have you been to me; your love to me was extraordinary, surpassing the love of women." verse 26
Today...
David had a true friend who understood his suffering the way that David's wives did not. Jonathan was with David from the beginning of it all they practically grew up together while David was in Saul's service.
Today many people think that David meant something sexual by saying that Jonathan's love is greater for him than women's love. It is not the case, because we see that God have chosen David and continued being with him because David abided by God's laws, and one of them was that a man should not lay with another man. If David did mean something sexual by this verse then God wouldn't have been on his side because that would mean that David didn't live by God's laws.
It is so important to have a friend who understands you and with who you have fellowship. We might have a lot of friends but we all have that one friend who is more than a friend to us, for us it's Jesus.
Jesus is the only friend that can understand us in each situation. He knows what it's like to live here on earth. A lot of Jesus' experience on earth is not recorded in the Bible, but he was just like us, he was thirsty and hungry, and had thoughts and feelings. When we are down and feel like the whole world doesn't understand us, we know for sure that Jesus will understand us.
I used to think that Jesus can never understand me when I had marriage problems, because he was never married here on earth, so how can He understand what I'm going through. But in addition to all know God, He is also the One who created marriage, He made Adam and Eve, He created this union between man and a woman, how can He not know what I'm going through?
Jesus is always our best friend out of all the friends we have here on earth. He is the only one who will tell us 100% without adding anything to it. But in addition to our best friend we have to always remember he is God, the One who died for us on the cross, so we can't disrespect him and treat him like we sometimes treat our friends. We have to have respect and understanding and communication between us and Jesus for this relationship to work.
