2-Samuel 2-5
David was now announced king over Judah, but not the rest of the Israel; the rest of the Israel appointed Saul's son as their king.
God was with David and David won many battles with the house of Judah. People of Israel knew the prophesy that Samuel told about David, that God will take Saul's kingship and give it to David, and they saw that God was with David through his success.
Two people from the Israel's side went into Saul's son's chamber in the middle of the day and killed him and took his head and brought it to David saying "Here is the head of Ish-bosheth, the son of Saul, your enemy, who sought your life." Ch. 4 verse 8
Throughout these chapters we don't see that Saul's son is against David, in fact when David asks for his wife Michal back, Ish-bosheth gives David his wife back without any argument. David did not fight Saul and did not fight his son, and just like he killed that Amalekite who killed Saul, he also killed these two people who killed Saul's son.
As David's kingdom grew stronger and stronger and Ish-bosheth's kingdom grew weaker, people were looking up to David and wanted to appoint him as the king over Israel.
"Then all the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron and said, "Behold we are your bone and flesh. In times past, when Saul was king over us, it was you who led out and brought in Israel. And the Lord said to you, 'You shall be shepherd of my people Israel, and you shall be prince over Israel.'" So all elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and King David made a covenant with them at Hebron before the Lord and they anointed David king over Israel. " Ch.5 verses 1-3
David first establishes his kingdom by capturing Jerusalem and making it a capital over all Israel and Judah.
Philistines then find out that one of their past soldier, David, became king over the whole Israel and so they go to war against him. God is with David and David wins that battle and gives all the credit to God. Then again Philistines line up to go to war against David, and God himself went before David to defeat Philistines, and Philistines were defeated.
Today...
David knew that God has appointed him as a king over Israel but that didn't come true right away, he waited patiently for his time to come.
One event that we are all waiting for is Jesus's second coming. We know it's coming, even thought people say that we're crazy and this is just little lullaby that we came up with, but we know it's true. We're waiting for Jesus to come.
But we're also waiting for other things as well, and often we try to hurry God up so we don't have to wait that long. A good example of this is marriage. We see that our friends are getting married and we are getting desperate to find our soul mate for life. Patience is tested in waiting for the right person, and when God gave you that person, waiting to get married and be blessed by family and Lord without committing a sin of adultery. And then praying and waiting for our kids to come to know Jesus as their Savior.
We are so used to getting things now that patience and walk in faith seems too risky for us. We need a step by step, error-proof plan or else we don't feel confident in life.
God placed David so close to Saul that David had many chances to raise his hand and kill Saul, but David knew that that is not the right way to become the king. He waited patiently for his time to come.
If we pray to God and ask Him to show us what's waiting for us in the next year, or tomorrow to make sure that our plans fall in line in God's, don't be surprised if you don't get an exact answer. It takes faith to walk with Jesus, because as we know we walk by faith and not by sight. We have the guide book, Bible and that's all the information that we need for our life here on earth.
While walking by faith we are patiently waiting for God's second coming.
